Pocus gets one in loss to USD, 15-6

2/21/04 - Nobody showed more excitement than junior team president Tommy Pocus as he scored his first goal in his two year career, as the Biola Eagles fell to the University of San Diego Toreros, 15- 6. Pocus's goal provided the much needed highlight of the day for the Eagles who working so hard all week in promoting their first home game as part of the third annual Lacrosse Awareness Week at Biola University.

Gray clouds and constant rain gave Biola's season home opener against San Diego a battle-like atmosphere. San Diego jumped on the board early with two quick goals, but Biola tightened up the defense to keep the game close.

Biola freshman Drew Hughey cut the lead in half towards the middle of the first quarter. A couple miscues on clearing lead to two more easy goals for the Toreros, but sophomore Josh Agadoni got one back late in the second quarter. The Eagles missed some great goal scoring opportunities when a couple players went one-on-one with the goalie, but came up empty. The half-time score read 4- 2, but could easily have been even.

Biola came out of half-time with barely any focus despite having a little first half momentum that carried into the second. The lack of focus, evident through lazy play on defense, gave the Eagles problems. In the third quarter the game got away from the Eagles and the Toreros never looked back. The Torero attackmen were able to sneak into the openings left by an unfocused defensive Biola squad leading to 6 goals.

It took Biola a whole quarter to get it's focus back on the field. In the fourth Biola stayed with the Toreros for the most part, scoring 3 goals compared to their 4 goals but they Toreros ran away with the lead.

On the defensive side, both teams delivered lots of big hits throughout the game. Biola keeper Tim Mann had a team record 28 saves including 6 one-on-ones.

The Biola scores came from Pocus who had 1, as did Hughey with his goal in the first. Agadoni contributed 4 goals. Freshman Kyle Thorn posted 3 assists while sophomore defenseman Jacob Walkowski and sophomore midfielder Keith Coburn each assisted on a goal as well.

Biola would like to thank it's faithful fans that came out and stayed through the rain to watch the game. Most of all Biola would like to thank God for giving the young men on both teams healthy able bodies and the opportunity to play this game of lacrosse.
