Eagles improve against Pepperdine

2/7/04 - The Biola Eagles continue to improve against strong opponents as they lost 16-4 versus the Pepperdine Waves. Last year Pepperdine won 19-4.

The Biola attackmen provided all the scoring for the Eagles. Freshman Drew Hughey notched the first goal for Biola in the first quarter by driving from X around the right side and putting the ball past the goalie. Sophomore Duncan Campbell drove from the left side, goal-line extended and hit the back of the net. In the second quarter, sophomore captain Josh Agadoni followed Hughey's example and scored by coming from behind the goal and receiving a pass from freshman Kyle Thorn. The last Eagle goal came from the good awareness of Campbell when he picked up a loose ball on the crease and shot it in.

The Eagles' defense lead by defensive player of the game, Sophomore Aaron Klett (2 GB, 5 TA, and 4 Clears), had its ups and downs. They committed well to their pre-game strategy of shutting off the crease and allowing the up-top shots, but Freshman goalie Peter Wagenet had difficulty in his first start by default because sophomore Tim Mann could not make the first half of the game. Wagenet showed promise by giving up only 10 goals while Mann gave up 6.

Most notably, the defense did not allowing a fast break goal out of five attempts. Freshman midfielder Greg Ebel showed great heart and hustle by attacking ground balls and taking vicious, flag drawing checks.

In, all the Eagles head into the rest of the season with confidence and vow to learn from this game in order to improve future performances. Next week, the Eagles look forward to playing cross-town rival UC Irvine. Glory and thanks be given to God.
